Editor's Notes

I LOVE STATISTICS! I actually calculated and logged data about the Bible over 4 years ago (at the time of writing this) in 2020, but I was unsatisfied with the small amount of data produced and the many inaccuracies. So, over the course of around 3 weeks, I have restudied and logged thousands of facts about the KJV Bible (I may have also added data after the main load was finished). This time I have carefully calculated and recalculated the data to get it as accurate as possible. Of course, I'm sure there are still inaccuracies as I'm only a human. If you do find anything you know is inaccurate, don't hesitate to

What is the TRUE center of the Bible?

The

"center"

of the Bible is actually a highly debated topic. This is because there are dozens possibly hundreds of ways to calculate the

"center"

of the Bible! These different methods can return the

"center"

of the Bible with positions being up to 35% different. To be clear, a 50% difference would be half the Bible, 35% is the equivalent of Lamentations to the end of Revelation! With such a horrific difference, it demands a standard. So, I thought long and hard about what should be classed as the true center of the Bible. I finally decided the standard for the center of the Bible should be based off of the number of characters. I decided this since the Bible was originally written or printed. The thickness of a basic printed Bible (with no additional notes or indexes) would be determined only by the length of the text found therein. Therefore, if you opened the Bible to the exact center, the center would not be based on the number of verses or chapters, but the amount of text (i.e. the number of characters). This method really makes the most sense. For example, take the sentence:

"I am the one who made this extensive compilation of information."

A super quick glance and you will be able to tell that the center of the sentence is somewhere in the word

"extensive"

. But, if we determine the center of the sentence by the number of words, the

"center"

is the word

"made"

because one side of the sentence has much sorter words than the other. This method (though technically correct in it's own way) is very unintuitive (and this type of offset also affects counting by verses and chapters). It makes much more sense to take the number of characters and use that to determine the center of the sentence, which in this case would be the

"ns"

in

"extensive"

.

You might think that the shear volume of text in the Bible would help even this out some, but, though it does help some, it still doesn't completely resolve the issue, especially because of the significant difference between the old and new testaments. The average verse length of the Old Testament is 137 characters, while the average verse length of the New Testament is 118 characters. So, if you calculate the center of the Bible by the number of verses, you will be about 1.6% off from the true center of the Bible which might not sound like much but that's more than the entirety of Hosea, Joel, Amos, and Obadiah! Most people say the center verse of the Bible is Psalm 118:8 or some even say Psalm 118:9 but I can find no basis for either claim whether counting by character, word, verse, chapter, book or some convoluted combination of them. Some say the center of the Bible is Psalm 103:1, 2. This is correct if you count by the number of verses but, as already stated, this method will leave you 1.6% off from the true center of the real, physical Bible.

So, that's my long explanation for why I chose to highlight centers by character rather than word or verse. The center verse of the real, physical Bible is Psalm 62:7 which says:

"In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God."

Isn't that such an incredible verse to be the center of the Bible?

How I gathered the data

I gathered most of this data by writing scripts/software which would read everything in the Bible and return whatever I was after. This made it much easier and faster to gather data as well as making it more accurate.
